2. Feature Article: COACH YOURSELF FOR SUCCESS

I received an email last week from a woman inquiring about
coaching. She questioned the cost of coaching, and wondered what
people can do when they are not able to afford a coach. This is a
great question, and one of the answers is "coach yourself". There
are many things that people can do to develop themselves personally,
and they don't always require an outlay of cash:

1. Read one hour per day in your chosen field or in the area of personal
development, or both
. Because most people read very little, you will
become an expert in your field in just three years. Your local library
can provide most of the books you need, and they are provided at no
cost to you.

2. Listen to audio tapes (or CDs) in your car. If your commute to work
is 15 minutes one way, then you will be in your car for 125 hours per
year. This is the equivalent of three 40-hour work weeks. Imagine
what would happen if you turned your car into a "university on
wheels", and invested that time in your personal growth and
development. Many libraries have books on tape, as well as audio
programs in various areas of personal development.

3. Identify your values, and align your life around those values. Many
people's lives are not oriented around their values, and they are
frustrated trying to determine why they aren't happy, or aren't
reaching their goals. When you are expressing your values, you are
being true to yourself. Pursuing goals that aren't in line with your
values leads to frustration. Living in alignment with your values
leads to fulfillment.

4. Attend courses, workshops and seminars regularly. The design of
such materials requires hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of
hours to create. When you attend a seminar, you benefit from
someone else's efforts to distill the most important information on
that subject. Although some events can be very expensive, many
are also quite reasonable.

5. Surround yourself with support systems. Getting independent,
objective feedback is a great way to fuel your personal growth.
Built-in accountability is another benefit to such a structure of
support. Create a mastermind group, or find a friend who is also
interested in such an arrangement.

6. Develop the habit of extreme self-care. Treat your body as a temple,
and it will support you in producing extraordinary results in every
other area of your life. Exercise regularly, in the form of strength
training, as well as cardiovascular workouts. Drink lots of water. I
know half your body weight in ounces sounds excessive, but it isn't.
Finally, give yourself the gift of solitude. Enjoy quiet time every day.

7. Keep a journal. Keep a permanent record of what you're noticing in
your life. This could be a gratitude journal, where you record what
you're grateful for in your life. Or you could record events*daily
happenings*in your life. Jot down observations about what is
occurring around you. There is no wrong way to write in a journal,
and the process can be incredibly rewarding.

8. Design your ideal life. If life were perfect, what would it look like?
What would you do, be and have if you could wave a magic wand,
and make it so? What would you attempt to do if you knew you
could not fail? Your ideal life is contained within your answers to
these questions. Begin today to paint the picture of what this ideal
life would look like.

9. Create a plan to get from where you are to where you want to be.
You know where you are currently. And you've designed your ideal
life. Now determine what it will take to get from Point A to Point B.
Write down everything that will have to happen to make this a reality.
What will you have to do that you're not doing now? Who will you
need to meet? What support structures will need to be in place?
When will all this take place?

10. Just do it. At some point, you will need to "jump." It will not always
be comfortable doing so, yet it is only when you move outside your
comfort zone that breakthroughs can occur. This is where fear usually
steps in, and puts up that big wall in front of you. So climb over it,
go around it, dig under it, or knock it down. If you continue to take
action in the direction of your ideal life, your fears will eventually
go away.

At LifeExcellence.com, we strive to provide personal development
solutions at all levels, from no investment (this newsletter, our
motivational screen saver) to small investment (books and tapes) to
bigger investment (coaching). We're working on solutions that fall
between books and tapes and coaching, which will take the form of
teleclasses, ebooks and group coaching. We are also developing
additional freebies.

I've said it before, but it's worth repeating. The best investment that
you can make is an investment in yourself. Make the decision to
invest 3-5% in your own personal development, and "coach yourself"
using the tips in this newsletter. Soon you will find yourself living
your ideal life!

5. Self-Care: Bone-Building Foods

The road to strong bones is paved with calcium-rich food. Leafy
green vegetables and low-fat dairy products are excellent sources
of calcium, the mineral that puts stiffness into your skeletal system
and keeps your bones from turning rubbery and fragile.

Your body uses calcium for more than keeping your bones strong.
Calcium permits cells to divide, regulates muscle contraction and
relaxation and plays an important role in the movement of protein
and nutrients inside cells. If you don't absorb enough from what
you eat to satisfy these requirements, your body will take it from
your bones. Because your body doesn't produce this essential
mineral, you must continually replenish the supply. Even though
the recommended daily amount is 1,200 mg, most adults don't eat
more than 500 mg.

Dairy products are rich in calcium and most contain phosphorous
and magnesium and are generally fortified with vitamin D, all of
which help your body absorb and use calcium. An 8-ounce glass
of milk provides 300 mg; a 6-ounce container of low-fat yogurt,
400 mg. Many other foods contain calcium as well. A cup of kale
offers 95 mg; a cup of tofu, 260 mg; and an 8-ounce glass of calcium-
fortified orange juice, 300 mg. You can also add nonfat dry milk to
soups or sauces. Just one-quarter cup of dry milk provides 375 mg
of calcium. And don't forget to drink vitamin D-fortified milk or get
out in the sun for 15 or 20 minutes a day.

6. Make a Difference

Big Brothers Big Sisters of America

Founded in 1904, this premier mentoring program is built on the
philosophy that a one-on-one relationship is a very effective way to
transform a child's life. The program helps to instill self-confidence
and self-esteem, and kids in Big Brothers Big Sisters are less likely
to use drugs, skip school, or behave violently. This organization is
more essential today than ever, given the times in which we live.

7. Final Thoughts: Opportunity

The air we breathe is so freely available that we take it for granted.
Yet without it we could not survive more than a few minutes. For
the most part, the same air is available to everyone, and everyone
needs it. Some people use the air to sustain them while they sit
around and feel sorry for themselves. Others breathe in the air and
use the energy it provides to make a magnificent life for themselves.

Opportunity is the same way. It is everywhere. Opportunity is so
freely available that we take it for granted. Yet opportunity alone is
not enough to create success. Opportunity must be seized and acted
upon in order to have value. So many people are so anxious to "get
in" on a "ground floor opportunity," as if the opportunity will do all
the work. That's impossible.

Just as you need air to breathe, you need opportunity to succeed. It
takes more than just breathing in the fresh air of opportunity,
however. You must make use of that opportunity. That's not up to
the opportunity. That's up to you. It doesn't matter what "floor" the
opportunity is on. What matters is what you do with it.
