Organize Your Vehicle in 9 Simple Steps

This week’s clutter challenge should you choose to accept it is to get your vehicle organized.

Does you car or mini van double as an office, restaurant, or toy room? Is the front seat is stacked with stuff, is there are unidentified food items rolling around, have the kids lost CD’s and is the trunk stacked with last years sporting equipment? If so, it sounds like time to clear the vehicle clutter:

Here are 9 simple steps to whip your vehicle into shape (and keep it that way) for the New Year.

1. Tuck some cleaning wipes and paper towels in the car for easy clean up. Most everything is easier to clean before it dries.

2. Put in one or two garbage cans or bags in your car to collect trash. You can Velcro these down for easy use. Then every time you go grocery shipping grab an extra plastic shopping bag, take the bag out of the garbage and replace it with the empty one.

3. Use over-the-seat organizers to keep children’s toys, media items, cords, maps, umbrellas, gloves and other essentials at hand.

4. Consider milk crates, boxes or cargo organizers to keep your trunk's contents organized. These work especially well to keep bags of groceries from tipping over.

5. Add de-cluttering and washing your car to your cleaning house cleaning routine. Once month have a set appointment to organize the car.

6. Toss there items into a duffle bag as a roadside emergency kit: spare warm clothing and comfortable shoes in case you need to keep warm or walk a distance, Battery powered radio and extra batteries, Flashlight and extra batteries, Blanket, Booster cables, Fire extinguisher (5 lb., A-B-C type), First aid kit and manual, Bottled water and non-perishable high energy foods, such as granola bars, raisins and peanut butter, Shovel, Tire repair kit and pump, Flares.

7. Pack a small first aide kit and pop it in your glove box.

8. Make it a new household rule that all family members are responsible for removing what they bring in to the car. You might try junk jail for anything they leave behind and to spring the item they can do an extra chore. You might be surprised how young you can start this new habit with small children.

9. Place a folder with menus from your favorite take out restaurants in your car so the next time you are running late you have everything you need to easily order up dinner.

Having your vehicle in order and clean makes you feel good. Plus you can find what you need easily.

Most of us are in our cars so often, an average of 15 hours a week, so make it as pleasant as possible.

Try this today, you’ll be glad you did. Happy holidays, Jamie
