Reduce Your "To Read" Pile in 6 easy steps
The week's clutter challenge asks "How tall is your to read pile?" and "How many items do you have stacked that youre going to get to someday?" Well today is someday! Take control of your to read pile in just six easy steps, I guarantee youll feel better! Ready? 1. Schedule reading time. Reading does not happen in your spare time. You must make time to get it done. Try setting your timer for 18 minutes and reading/scanning what you can in that amount of time. Even 18 minutes can make a dent. 2. Carry and read. Toss those must read items in a bag that you can carry with you when you go out. The next time youre in the doctors office, waiting for a meeting to begin or waiting to pick up a child you can read something useful. 3. Separate reading material from reference material. Many times they end up in the same pile but they are not the same thing. If it is for reference store it away where it belongs. If it is for reading keep it nearest the place you have the best chance of making time to read it. (Note: bedside is usually not the best choice.) 4. Get real. There are only so many hours in the day you simply cant read everything. So if its three months or older let it go, without feeling guilty. 5. Stop what you can from coming. Do not take home the minutes from the meeting or a stack of brochures if you dont need them. Cancel magazine subscriptions you dont read regularly, you can get individual issues at the store. Checkout. And ask family members to stop giving you bags of magazines they are looking to part with. 6. Share reading material generously. Split a magazine subscription with a co-worker or neighbor. Bring reading material to hospitals, assisted living, day cares (for art projects) and libraries. That's it for this week's challenge. You can do this, choose one idea and put it into action today, you'll feel more in control!
