Real of Just Really Clever Ideas for
Cutting the Clutter and Storing the Stuff

This week I'd like to suggest these low or no cost ideas for cutting the clutter and storing the stuff without breaking the bank.

Shop at home first, I bet you can find a way to improve your storage without buying something new! As this week's clutter challenge give one of these ideas a try:

Jumbled Jewelry
Ice cube trays make the perfect organizer for jewelry. Each section easily holds a pair of earring, necklace, pin or other item without tangling. Plus you can easily stack a few high depending on the depth of your drawer just remember to measure first.

Chaotic Cosmetics
A cutlery tray, usually found in the kitchen, is a great solution for cosmetics in the bathroom. They make expandable versions of this tray so you can find one that will fit your drawer. Use one section for eyeliners, another for lipsticks and so on. By sectioning your cosmetics by category they will be easy to find.

Frantic Free Samples
For all those free samples of shampoo, hand lotion and bonus cosmetics that are not your color grab a basket, spray paint it if you need to freshen it up, and stash them all together. When guests stay over put the basket out with a decorative sign that reads “please help yourself.”

Barrettes and Scrunchies
A muffin pan holds barrettes and other hair accessories neatly. Scrunchies can live on an empty paper towel roll, hang the roll from one end on the inside of a cabinet door and slide them on. If you prefer to hang the holder on a wall then you can decorate the roll first or cover it with contact paper for a more decorative look.

Divide and Conquer Drawers
Give your drawers a makeover using very small, small and medium size box lids they work wonders as drawer dividers. Arrange them so you get the tightest fit possible and then fill each lid. If the lid is taller than the drawer depth simply trim it. And keep in mind you can place a smaller lid inside a bigger lid to create a small section to hold littler items.

Shoes and Boots
If snowy or muddy shoes and boots make a mess of your entryway put down an old towel and place a large foil-baking sheet on top. Keep the shoes on the tray until they are dry, to wash the tray rinse it in your utility sink and dispose of it at the end if the season.

Clothing and Toys
A chest of drawers whose drawers are no longer functioning is still a great piece of furniture. Dispose of the drawers and take out the drawer runners. Then use the space as a shelving unit to hold toys or clothing. It is much easier to put them into a cubby like this than it is to cram into dresser drawers or toy box anyway. And if there is no bottom to the shelf when you pull out the drawer, measure the space and have your local home supply store cut a thin, inexpensive piece of wood to slide in. Sometimes they even have scraps left over at no charge. You can also go to www.FreeCycle.org to locate items being given away in your county.

Children’s Artwork and Keepsakes
An unused pizza box is the best place to store all the over sized artwork. Pick up one box per child and grab one for yourself. Label each box with the person’s name or use a photo of the person for easy identification and stack them under a bed or on a closet shelf. If a treasured item is too large to place in the keepsake box, take a picture of it and place the picture in the box.

Conquering Cabinet Doors
Maximize your storage space by using the backs of doors, especially cabinet doors. Simply tack up a tote bag for more storage space. In the kitchen you can fill it with lids to the plasticware and in the bathroom you can house your blow dryer.

Piles of Plastic Bags
Keep the bags on hand by stuffing them into a tote bag with a small hole cut out of the bottom. Hang the tote in a convenient location, fill from the top dispense from the bottom.

Overcoming Odds and Ends
Buttons, pins, loose change, nuts and bolts, try film canisters, margarine tubs or baby food jars, just be sure to label them clearly.

That's it for this week, by simply implementing one or more of these low and no cost ideas will have your space organized in no time and you’ll have money left over!
