How to End Countertop Clutter

Ever notice how your kitchen countertops can become instant clutter magnets? Frustrating isn’t it? No sooner do you clear it off then the piles are back!

For this week’s challenge I’d like to suggest you implement one of these solutions for eliminating kitchen countertop clutter:

Suggestion #1: Edit the appliances and other items you leave out. If you do not use it every day then most likely it does not belong front and center. Bread makers, mixers and stacks of cookbooks should be stored elsewhere.

Suggestion #2: Have an easy place on the wall to jot notes. A chalkboard, a whiteboard, or a space painted with chalkboard paint makes the perfect place to make notes, like what you need to buy at the store. Stop writing all the notes on little scraps of paper, instead make it a habit to check the board while making your shopping list.

Suggestion #3: Create a lost and found drawer or basket. A single place that every member of the family can reach where you toss items that are left out. Plastic caps, Barbie shoes, cords, and the like, toss it into lost and found. Then every person can locate his or her own belongings.

Suggestion #4: Designate a single place for certain types of mail. A spot for unpaid bills, a place for items to be dealt with and another place for catalogs and magazines then another place for your spouse’s mail. And only bring in the mail when you have time to sort it, stop bringing it in and laying it down.

Suggestion #5: Give yourself and every member of your family a treasure box, a single place to store artwork they create, souvenirs from vacations, mementos from trips. Once you are tired of looking at the playbill from your night out toss it out or into the treasure box.

To avoid overwhelm choose only one suggestion and try it this week. Next week you can try another one. Now forward this email onto family, friends and co-workers so they too can have clutter-free kitchen countertops.

Enjoy your newly uncovered countertops! Have a clutter-free week, Jamie
