Best Vacation/Day Tip Organizing Ideas

Whether you are planning a full vacation or just a few day trips planning and preparation can mean the difference between relaxed time and a stressful time.

Here are some of my favorite vacation organizing ideas, try one or two for your next trip.

1. Prep.

Once you know where you're going plan by making a list of what you need. Maps? A passport? Tickets? Reservations?

Note: new US Passport rules http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/06/20/AR2007062001380.html

You can even make a vacation binder by using a three ring binder and filling it with your ideas, brochures, itineraries etc.

You can use another three ring binder for all the day trip ideas and brochures and things.

2. Call ahead.

Before you pack a hairdryer or iron call ahead to see what is provided.

Note: If you want to pack less clothing you can visit the laundromat while on vacation or splurge and pay for laundry service if available.

3. Apply the 50% rule.

When packing lay out everything you think you need then put back 50%. I know it sounds extreme but it really does work- trust yourself. Try to choose mix and match outfits.

4. Use a packing list.

Create a master packing list; there is one in the back of my first bestseller 1,000 Best Quick and Easy Organizing Secrets.

Copy the list and store them in the empty luggage for future use.
Check off items as you pack then pack the list, that way when you pack to come home you can check the list to be sure you remembered everything you brought.

5. Take an empty suitcase.

Pack an extra duffel bag or two to fill with souvenirs (yes I said it, but try to limit what you buy, it quickly becomes clutter. Opt for photos instead.)

6. There's no place like home.

Leave your home how you want to see it when you return, beds made, a clean sink etc... it is so nice to come home to a clean house.

7. Leave time to catch up.

Have you ever returned from vacation saying you need a vacation to recover from your vacation? Allow yourself time to ease back into your life. Say you plan to return on Monday to the office, let everyone know you'll start returning calls and emails on Tuesday to give yourself time.

8. Safety.

Put your mail on hold online at www.usps.com. Put lights on vacation timers. Unplug unused appliances and even consider turning off the water (as long as your pipes won't freeze.)

General car trip ideas:

1. be sure you have a comfy pair of old sneakers in the car in case you need to walk for assistance on the day you wore platform heels

2. pack the fast food toys or goodie bag toys from parties to take in the car- that way if they don't make it home it's not that big a deal

General flight ideas:

1. toss a clean pair of undergarments, your toothbrush and a few other essentials for freshening up in your carry on just in case your luggage goes missing

2. Take a photo of your luggage (yes you read it right) that way if it goes missing you can show the airline personnel exactly what they are looking for

3. tie a bright colored piece of material to your bags so they are quickly identifiable as they go around and around with all the other standard black bags that look remarkably similar

That’s it for this week. Spending a few extra moments preparing can really make a huge difference. Enjoy your summer!

Have a clutter-free week, Jamie
