Why Did I buy That? How an innocent purchase becomes clutter
As I arrived home today from running a few, what I thought would be quick, errands it took me two trips to get all my bags in the house! It was then I realized that Id only gone out for one thing, and I was coming home with over twenty! Some of them I truly did need, but as I unpacked the bags I realized some of them I didnt, they were either impulse buys or something that could have waited, like the big pack of paper towels although on sale I now have to store them until I finish the two big packs I already own. But here I was carting it all in the house and now I had to deal with it. I needed to put it away or find a home for it. Was it tempting to just leave it there in the bag until I needed it? You bet! But I knew if I did there was little likelihood Id ever use it and it would become clutter. So I took the time to dutifully put all my purchases away. As I did I mentally mulled over which ones I could have done without. I didnt need the two new style spatulas that promised not to slide into my bowl as I cooked total $9.00. I didnt need the new pen that I thought would be fun to sign my books with $12.00. And I didnt need the $39 vase that although the color matches my newly painted living room perfectly I have nowhere to put it right now and nothing to put into it! But I bought it anyway. I figure it took me an extra thirty minutes to shop for these items, an extra ten minutes to stand in line to buy them and an extra twenty minutes to find homes for them. Thats an hour wasted and Im minus $60. Have you ever done that? I bet you can answer yes to that question. So here is this weeks challenge: skip buying one thing youd buy because you want it not because you need it. Instead save your money, time and every and put it all to better use. Could you stay home and work on a craft project youve been meaning to get back to? Could you read a book instead of buying a new one for your to read pile? Could you spend time with family or friends instead of getting more stuff- that in most cases only becomes clutter anyway? Now dont get me wrong, I know we need to buy some things and others we simply want, I get that. But try skipping a single purchase and see how it feels. Me? I cant get my hour back, but I sure learned a great lesson. I hope youll try it this week. Until next week I hope you have a clutter-free day and happy organizing, Jamie
