Are You Using Your Power Hour?

Lately I’ve received more feedback than usual about the clutter challenge. Many of you have sent in helpful suggestions, success stories and kind comments. One request that came in was to cover work related challenges. This week’s challenge is a great tip for work, but I promise it works at home as well.

Please keep your success stories, comments and suggestions coming. I read every one.

Now for this week’s challenge: If you are like me you can start your day with the best of intentions, a list of things to do and a grand plan. Then the day starts, a phone call or you check email. Then someone interrupts you or you get directed. Before you know it the day is half over and you have not done a thing on your list. You might even skip lunch to make up time and deal with a new top priority item then you get one thing done on your list before it’s time to wrap up your day. Sound familiar?

This is how my day goes if I skip my power hour. But when I stick to my power hour idea my day turns around. I’ll share this trick with you now and I hope you will try it; it really does make a difference.

The first minutes of your day are the most important in terms of getting things done before the momentum of the day sweeps you along. The very start of your day is when you have the most control. This is the time BEFORE you check email, of maybe even before you turn on the computer, before you check voice mail and before you jump into the day’s list of to do items.

Although an hour would be great it is not required this idea works as a power half hour or even a power eighteen minutes.

The idea is to spend the first moments working towards something. For example maybe you have a project due in a week, this would be the time to spend time on it. You might not get it done, but you’ll have made progress so it does not become an emergency the day before it is due.

You might file your to file papers, the ones that never get put away during the rush of the day.

You might reply to the emails the have been waiting for your attention, the key is reply, not surf the Internet by clicking on all the links.

You get the idea; this is the time to make progress towards a project that never gets attention during the day. Once your power hour time is up only then do you dive into your day.

Can you see the difference? It really does work, try it and you’ll see. And yes it does work at home as well as in the office.

I hope you have a clutter-free week, I’ll check in with you next week with a new tip! -Jamie
