Create an Organization Station

The summer is fading and that makes it a perfect time to create a new simple organization system for an area of your home and life.

I’m going to share a station system that is just right for those of you with school aged children going back to school, but it works for much more than that! It might be for school, but it works well for everyday items like keys and umbrellas, or returns for the store, or items to leave the house like mail and bills.

Here’s how to set up your station:

1. Start with a book shelf, the taller the better to take advantage of vertical space (don’t have a spare shelf, you can always buy one but try checking out www.Freecycle.org and www.CraigsList.com )

2. Divide the shelves down the center with a vertical strip of tape if two people will be sharing it. You can also opt to paint the shelves two difference colors.

3. Screw in hooks or adhere 3M command hooks to the side (lower for small children) for jackets, hats and umbrellas.

4. Cut a hole in the back and run an extension cord through as the place to plug in your cell phone, PDA, iPod and other electronics. Tape down the cord to keep it from slipping away.

5. Slide a milk crate onto the bottom shelf for shoes and backpacks or briefcases.

6. Label one shelf as outgoing for all the items ready to leave the house, bills to mail, etc.

7. Pop a jar onto one shelf for lunch money, toll change, or lunch tickets.

8. Add trays or boxes one labeled in and one labeled out for permission slips, or incoming and outgoing mail.

9. Consider sticking a dry erase board to one side for daily notes or to write out a weekly schedule. If you prefer chalkboards you can use chalkboard paint.

10. Keep your new station nearest to the door you use most often, if you have a space challenge consider clearing out the hall closet and sliding the bookshelf inside.

That’s it! You’re done! No matter how you choose to use your new station it is guaranteed to make life simpler and you’ll get out of the house with all you need. It’s your life only simplified!

Until next Monday have a clutter-free week, Jamie
