What To Do With Warranties and Manuals

Do you have a file folder overflowing with manuals and warranties? Do you even own all the products you’re keeping the booklets for? Want a better solution?

If so you are not alone. Just this weekend I was clearing out some old files and I came across a hefty folder puckered with warranties and manuals. I took a few minutes to look through it and found booklets for remote controls, TV’s, waffle irons and cameras I no longer own!

But there were a few booklets that would have been useful if I’d only known where they were.

So this week, with the holidays fast approaching, before even more product manuals find their way into your home let’s take a moment to clean up your warranties and manuals.

I’d suggest choosing one of two ways to store your warranties and manuals:

*Way #1*

An accordion file

This expanding pocket file folder will allow you to label sections with the categories, then tie it up and store it away on a bookshelf or closet shelf.

*Way #2*

A three-ring notebook with clear plastic sheet protectors. With one category per sheet protector you can fit lots into the notebook. If you opt for this way you might consider multiple notebooks stored near the product category, for example, one in the kitchen, one in the garage and one in the playroom.

*HOW TO*

Go through the ones you have to ensure they are all still current

Create your new system, with categories such as:

Cooling/heating

Electronics

Cars (unless you keep these in the glove box or trunk)

Electronic Toys

Games

Kitchen

Tools and Equipment

Then keep up your new system by going thorough the warranties and manuals file every time you change the clocks.

A question I get all the time is, “Do I need to keep the booklets?”

My answer is that depends. If you feel comfortable looking things up online then you can almost always go to the manufacturer's website to view and print the manual.

If you have an extended warranty then you do need to keep the paperwork.

Going forward with the new booklets that will come into your home you might try a zip lock bag for everything, the booklets the extra pieces, any associated cords etc.

Label the baggie and date it so you look back you’ll know which is the most current.

That’s it you can whip your warranties and manuals file into shape in 18 minutes or less. Give it a try this week. Having the paperwork you need on hand when you need it makes life easier.

Until next week, Jamie
