Storing Seasonal Clothing

It’s springtime! That means it’s time to put away all those bulky winter clothes. But this year instead of making the clothing switch an overwhelming chore here are some easy tips for a smooth season swap.

For this week’s challenge start your seasonal swap in small blocks of time:

Avoid the B-I-G storage bins, big bins spell big trouble. They are too heavy to move when full and you end up mixing all sorts of categories of clothing inside because you have so much room.

Instead opt for medium size storage boxes or containers. That way you can put one or two categories of clothing in each. Imagine next winter being able to bring out the bin of just turtlenecks or just heavy sweaters instead of rooting through as huge bin for weeks as the seasons change.

If you didn’t wear it this winter ask yourself how much you really like it. Many times as you pack away clothing you can make at least one bag to share with a local charity.

Never store clothing away still wrapped in dry cleaner bags. That plastic deteriorates plus the dry cleaner gases are trapped against your clothes.

Label each container clearly on all sides so at a glance you know what’s inside.

Bring out a storage bin or two, then over the next few weeks as you do laundry add items to the containers that you know will be too warm to wear.

Once one bin is full switch it out for an empty one.

At the same time start to bring in some lighter clothes that you can wash and put away to wear.

Before you know it your switch will be complete!

The best part is by grouping and storing like items next year the swap will be virtually painless and super fast!

Oh course, do not store anything away that is in need of mending or cleaning. If you don’t feel like mending or cleaning it now you’ll be even less inspired to get it done next season. If you have a few things to clean or mend treat yourself to a stop at the tailors or the dry cleaners, they can probably get it done faster.

That’s it for this week’s challenge. Remember you do not have to finish swapping the clothing this week, you simply need to start. You’ll feel a lot better once you start. Until next Monday have a clutter-free week, Jamie
