Coaching Tip:
When you are fearful of taking the next step, take a leap instead.

Put It Into Practice
Step 1: Name your fear. Fears typically become more manageable once we bring them out into the open. Step 2: Ask "What if" questions. What if the best way through the fear is not an incremental step forward, but a complete paradigm shift? What if we broke down the walls between my department and theirs? What if my role changed? What if I looked at this stressful situation as an invitation to break out of my self-limiting beliefs? What if my limitations are actually strengths? What if my strengths are really limitations? What if I changed the rules of engagement? Step 3: Identify what it is that life is inviting you to let go of. Ask a trusted friend or coach to help you determine what old idea or belief you are clinging to that is no longer working for you. Are you willing to let go of it in order to reach your goal?
An Example |
After the light bulb was invented, the first lamps looked very much like the gas lanterns they replaced, except for the cord that connected the lamp to the electrical socket. It took a "leap" for someone to recognize that there was no need to be bound by the old "rules" anymore. Who said that a lamp had to be set on a table, a hook or the floor? Once the old rules were discarded, the light source of the room could be moved to the ceiling and the switch put on the wall. The cord did not need to be seen at all. What similar leap is your situation asking you to make?
