Put It Into Practice
Step 1: Recognize that the rules of engagement for sales and marketing have changed. A friendly personality, savvy sales skills and a network of relationships are still essential, but they are no longer enough. Clients want to know what value you bring to the table. Is there any substance behind your style?
Step 2: Create a plan for continuous learning. Identify the areas of knowledge required to understand your client's industry, business and work environment; systematically master them. Step 3: Let your knowledge open doors for sales opportunities. As you ask intelligent questions, share your informed perspective on industry issues and express empathy for difficult challenges, you are building the credibility and trust required for clients to accept you into their world. You have now earned the right to offer products and services as solutions.
