Lactose Overload - That old chestnut!
It's a classic diagnosis that comes up time and again when a baby is colicy. The baby is taken off the breast, the mother suppresses lactation and baby is set up for a lifetime of ill health.
Help to educate your colleagues about the causes, prevention and treatment of this common problem by reading these two articles.

LACTATION EXAM PRACTICE - Review course opens February 1
Lactation Exam Practice provides candidates for the IBLCE Examination with practice in multiple-choice assessments on a range of questions based on the blueprint of topics examined by IBLCE. There are 200 questions, 70 of them with photographs - just like the 'real' exam. Unlike the 'real' exam though when you submit your answers they are automatically graded and you receive your results, with feedback on every question, immediately!
BUT... as good as that is, there's no need to wait for a one-day or one-week prep class to ask questions of the experts! You'll stay in the program from whenever you enroll until the week AFTER the IBLCE exam. Use the forum in the program to ask questions of the experts, discuss questions and support and communicate with fellow exam-takers giving each other extra confidence.
This is the fourth year we've offered Lactation Exam Practice and each year exam candidates tell us how much better prepared they were for the Exam. Enroll from February 1st - you'll be very pleased you did.
Book Review
Adventures in Tandem Nursing 2003 Hilary Flower (LLLI, Illinois, USA)
Hilary Flower has obviously enjoyed writing this very substantial book on a little-discussed topic. Flower takes an empathic approach and keeps the best interests of everyone in the tandem nursing relationship at the forefront of the discussion.
While having an American flavor, Adventures in Tandem Nursing contains a wealth of information that would be of particular interest to parents everywhere. The book also contains quotes & stories from mothers from many parts of the world and has interesting snippets on breastfeeding practice and lore from Bhutan, India and other places.
The book succeeds as a comprehensive resource for parents while also contributing to the knowledge of health professionals working with the tandem breastfeeding family. It is thoroughly referenced and contains useful information on uncommon questions such as, Can I take galactogogues while pregnant to build my supply for my nursing toddler? and What if I am pregnant with twins. Can I still tandem feed? There is also a comprehensive look at actual dietary requirements and a discussion on the common old wives tales.
One area that perhaps needs more exploration is that of the mother in the paid-workforce who wants to, or is tandem feeding. This issue gets only a brief mention while more could be said about breastfeeding-friendly workplaces, legislation for lactation breaks and tips on negotiating with employers. However, "Dealing with doubters" gets its own chapter and has supportive information that could be applied to employers and childcare providers.
The book is set out into 3 parts: Part 1 is a meandering discussion on anything and everything to do with the process of becoming, maintaining and ending an experience as a tandem nursing couplet (or triplet!); Part 2 takes an in-depth look at nutrition for the mother (pregnant and non-pregnant), the nursing child and the foetus; Part 3 is a selection of mothers personal experiences. A health professional would need to use the index and contents pages in order to find information quickly. The current scientific data is put forward and discussed, however few absolute conclusions are reached due to the dearth of investigation and research into the experience of tandem breastfeeding.
The recurring theme throughout this overwhelmingly positive book is that of body wisdom and the vital importance of women listening to what their body is telling them is the right thing for them, the child/ren, and the family unit. Adventures in Tandem Nursing is great book for parents and a useful resource for health professionals. Reading it has added to my clinical knowledge and I feel better equipped to discuss this sometimes-contentious situation with clients and other health professionals.
