ETHICS FOR LACTATION CONSULTANTS - Online!!

The release of our latest course will make many of our subscribers very happy! This online course gets you involved in thinking about and discussing ethical issues which impact practice.

ET01: Ethics for Lactation Consultants has been developed to give International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) and those studying towards this qualification, an understanding of the ethical principles and codes of practice that will guide them in their day-to-day work with mothers and babies.

After learning about the various theories of ethics the student will work through select issues that could cause ethical dilemmas, referring to the guidance offered by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners’ documents ‘Code of Ethics’ and ‘Clinical Competencies’, and the International Lactation Consultant Association ‘Standards of Practice’. This is followed by a section on the WHO International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes.

The course is wholly online and is facilitated by an experienced IBCLC who will pose ethical issues for discussion and guide discussions of issues raised by students.

If you need E CERPs or want to improve your knowledge of ethics click here on the Health e-Learning website for information and to enroll.

ONLINE JOURNALS FOCUSSING ON LACTATION

As a response to the growing acknowledgement of the importance of breastfeeding to the health of individuals, and ultimately a nation, two new peer-reviewed journals have been launched recently.
The great news is that they are both online!

The International Breastfeeding Journal is an open-access journal. Click on the title to be taken to this great new journal where you can read the articles already published.

The second one is a subscription journal. You'll find more details about this journal, Breastfeeding Medicine by clicking on its title.

WHO GROWTH CHARTS

Have you seen the growth charts developed following the outcomes of the World Health Organization Multicenter Growth Reference Study? These growth charts are based on the normal growth expected of infants and children who are fed naturally with the addition of appropriate complementary foods from 6 months of age.
If not, go to the WHO Child Growth Standards website to read more about it and download the growth charts.

AROUND THE JOURNALS

  • Two papers addressed causes of an increased risk of childhood leukemia and lymphoma. Both McNally and Altinkaynak confirm that being artificially-fed increases the risk of the child getting acute lymphocytic leukemia, acute myeloid leukemia, Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

  • Racicioglu et al studied breastfeeding women who fasted during Ramadan. They concluded: Ramadan fasting had no significant effect on the macronutrient composition of the breast milk and consequently the growth of the infants. There were significant differences in some of the micronutrients such as zinc, magnesium and potassium. The nutritional status of lactating women was affected by Ramadan fasting. All of the nutrient intakes (except vitamins A, E and C) decreased during Ramadan. For these reasons, it would seem prudent to excuse lactating women from fasting during Ramadan.
