SPECIAL OFFER for World Breastfeeding Week!!
The theme for this year's World Breastfeeding Week is "Code Watch! 25 years of Protecting Breastfeeding". The International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes was adopted by the World Health Assembly in 1981, 25 years ago, to protect infant health. Before this time unscrupulous marketing practices of infant formula had caused women to believe artificial milks were better for their infants. Deaths of millions of babies had to occur before this Code was accepted. We must remain ever vigilant, ensuring all the Resolutions of the WHO Code are upheld for the health of our children.
Health e-Learning would like to support this year's theme. Education is our focus, so for the month of August, everyone who enrolls into 3 or more BreastEd courses will receive the online course "Ethics for Lactation Consultants" FREE. This Ethics course covers several interesting topics, with a module devoted to reading and understanding the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes. Those who have already completed this course tell us they have a much better understanding of the Code and what they can do to protect and promote breastfeeding using this Code. We at Health e-Learning would like to have everyone involved in breastfeeding understanding the Code and knowing what it is that each individual can do to implement it. Ethics for Lactation Consultants will give you the confidence and knowledge to deal with infringements and encourage compliance. Take advantage of this great offer today by enrolling HERE.
PAIN MANAGEMENT FOR THE BREASTFED INFANTNeonates, and particularly preterm infants, experience many painful procedures in their early lives. Physiological changes brought about by pain may contribute to the development of morbidity in these neonates. Their pain has been managed in various ways - ignoring it, holding or swaddling during the procedure, breastfeeding or using pharmacological agents such as opioids, acetaminophen or sucrose. The Cochrane Collaboration, its library providing the gold standard for evidence-based practices, has published a review on the effectiveness of breastfeeding and breastmilk for procedural pain management for neonates. Click on this link, Breastfeeding or breast milk for procedural pain in neonates to read the abstract - the full review is available from that website. Just another paper proving the superiority of breastfeeding, and another way to keep the NICU Baby Friendly.

Effects of parenting styles on infant crying and sleepingThe amount of crying an infant does, and the amount of time the infant sleeps are major concerns of parents. Parent educators and those involved in caring for mothers and their new babies in the first few days after birth have a significant role to play in advising parenting styles that will help them to deal with this. St James-Roberts, et al studied three different parenting styles - London-style, Copenhagen-style and proximal care. From this study we learn that the parenting style has significant effects on the amount of crying and sleeping the infant does. Knowing this we can guide parents to adopt a form of parenting that gives them, and their infants, the most enjoyment of each other.
