Welcome to a New Year!
Did you make any New Year resolutions? I make the same ones every year (it saves time!) ... eat better, exercise more, balance work and leisure. One year I might even achieve them!
I see I chose my resolutions well when I read the recommendations of the World Cancer Research Fund which was released recently. The link for you to read them is below - I'm sure you'll find them interesting, and maybe worthy of a 'resolution' of your own.
Health e-Learning makes the same resolution each year too ... keep providing top quality education that is as convenient as possible for those who care for mothers and babies. To achieve this we start the year with our New Year Special. This fantastic discount is very popular among IBLCE exam candidates and those needing CERPs. And of course, from February you'll be able to enroll in Lactation Exam Practice which receives rave reviews every year from exam-takers.
The overwhelming success of GOLD07 showed us (and others) how convenient top quality, international conferences can be - for everyone! Planning for the GOLD08 Conference (our online conference) is well underway. Make a note in your diary to be near an internet connection in May this year! More details in a later newsletter.
Convenience doesn't stop with individuals. The many hospitals that now use our online courses tell us it's never been so convenient and cost-effective to provide quality staff education. Our team of developers has been working on Breastfeeding Essentials to include the 7-Point Plan for Community Health Centers in addition to the 10 Steps. Keep an eye out for this - it will be released very soon.
I hope we are making your life that little bit more convenient. If you've got suggestions on how else we could help you email me anytime - but it's only education I can help with, sorry!
As a final reflection on the year that was and the year that's about to be, I feel privileged to be a part of the education of so many wonderful people who then go on to help more and more mothers to breastfeed their babies. Thank you.
Until next time,
Enjoy those mothers and babies,

Denise Fisher, IBCLC

Breastfeeding Prevents Cancer
The World Cancer Research Fund released its recommendations to decrease an individual's risk of getting cancer. Of particular note to us professionally is the recommendation for mothers to breastfeed exclusively for 6 months then continue breastfeeding with complementary foods added, reducing cancer risk in both mother AND baby. It's great to see as prestigious an anti-cancer organization as this recognizing the impact of artificial feeding on health. To read their recommendations click on WCRF Recommendations.
Could you use the recommendations of this important document in your practice?
Breastfeeding Does NOT Increase Risk of Dental Caries
Many mothers are told to wean prematurely or made to feel guilty that their continued breastfeeding has caused dental caries in their baby. The results from a large study conducted in America demonstrated that there is no evidence to suggest that breastfeeding or its duration are risk factors for early childhood caries, severe early childhood caries, or decayed and filled surfaces on primary teeth.
