Breastmilk production, corticosteroids and preterm birth.
In this month's Pediatrics journal researchers report on the effect of prematurity and corticosteroids on onset of lactogenesis II and volume of milk produced up to 9 days postpartum. Read this interesting article by clicking HERE. The authors found that some mothers, particularly those who birth very preterm or 3 to 9 days after receiving corticosteroids, are more likely to have delayed lactogenesis II and express less breastmilk. Practitioners can use this information to support an increased frequency of expressing and other measures to increase milk supply.
