GOLD08: WOW! What a conference!

Convenient, quality education
What you want, When you want, Where you want.

GOLD08: It's THE conference of the year!
Starts this Friday - register NOW!

It's a conference. It's an international lactation conference. It's an online conference that everyone (with internet access) can attend. It's very affordable too - the best value you'll get for your money.

SO many excellent speakers gathered together at one conference - and all on your computer.
GOLD08 is all about helping you to help mothers and babies to breastfeed by bringing you the latest and greatest research and clinical information conveniently and affordably.

What is it you want to know about breastfeeding?

Is nipple damage a challenge for you? If so, listen to Dr Donna Geddes showing us her ultrasound studies of what is happening in baby's mouth when nipple damage is occurring, and pre- and post-frenotomy when tongue-tie is involved. Then listen to Dr Katsumi Mizuno describe his findings on the pressures that are happening in the mouth and their relation to milk flow and nipple trauma. And definitely don't miss Bridget Ingle's talk on recognising the probable cause from the type of damage you see when looking at the nipple, and how you can help the mother to prevent it.

No - your problem is a baby with a cleft palate, mother has to have surgery and she needs to hand express now, but pump long term after this?

Easy. First go to Christa Herzog-Isler's talk where she'll share her many years of experience helping baby's with clefts to receive breastmilk at the breast and using alternatives. Then listen to Dr Tom Hale as he tells you the effects of anesthetics on breastmilk and the baby, before dropping in to Genevieve Becker's discussion of hand expressing, then on to Dr Ching Tat Lai's findings on when is the best timing and frequency for pumping.

But why don't some mothers breastfeed? Karyn-grace Clark will explore the issues women face when making this decision. Pamela Morrison will broach the controversial topic of whether the mother has a duty of care to breastfeed. Prof Lars Hanson will describe the immunological protection that breastmilk provides babies, and Dr Brian Palmer will tell you why babies who breastfeed are prettier and healthier. That should make for interesting discussions in prenatal classes!

And there's lots more excellent speakers. Don't miss it - you will regret it if you do.

HURRY - the conference begins on the 16th/17th May

Are we overusing antibiotics for mastitis?

Kvist, et al have reported on the bacterial colonization of breastmilk in women with and without mastitis. You may be surprised to learn that many women with potential pathogens in their breastmilk, even at high bacterial counts, either recovered spontaneously from mastitis or did not have any symptoms of mastitis. Recovery from mastitis occurred without antibiotic treatment in 85% of the cases in this study.

With countries such as Australia and the USA reporting a 77% - 97% treatment-with-antibiotics rate, now, with the spread of methicillin resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and other multi-resistant pathogens, may be an opportune time to study this paper and its references and develop a policy to avoid the imprudent use of antibiotics.

IBLCE EXAM Candidates

Lactation Exam Practice is in full swing again this year. This online program helps prepare candidates for the types of questions you will face on the IBLCE exam. This very popular program will give you lots of practice answering multiple-choice questions as well as showing you which areas of the Blueprint you may need to do a bit more study on.
59% of last year's students told us they had 'litte or no' confidence' prior to doing Lactation Exam Practice, but after doing it 90% reported feeling 'quite confident or increased confidence'. We're very proud of that - we're here to help you!

Join a few hundred of your colleagues now and start practicing, learning, sharing and gaining confidence.
