Feature
Article: LESSONS
LEARNED AT THE SUPER BOWL
A
couple weeks ago, I had the privilege of realizing one of my life
goalsattending the Super Bowl. Ive been to big sporting
events beforethe NBA Championship (Game 5 of the Pistons
beating the Lakers in 2004), several Final Fours and the MLB All-Star
Game in 2005. But none was a bigger spectacle than Super Bowl
XL. My son, Andy, and I enjoyed the entire day walking around
downtown Detroit, visiting Winter Blast, viewing the ESPN broadcast,
and watching the thousands of people celebrating the Big Game.
So
what does all this have to do with success, personal development,
and the achievement of goals? Everything. Sports is a metaphor
for life, and we can learn a lot about achieving success by watching
world-class athletes. Here are a few lessons I learned at the
Super Bowl:
1.
The Perseverance Lesson. Jerome Bettis finally is wearing
a Super Bowl ring for the first time in his 13-year career. Coach
Bill Cowher also received his first ring, after leading his team
into the playoffs 10 times in the last 14 years. The Steelers
are models of perseverance, as they continued for years to do
what they knew they needed to do to be successful. And finally
it paid off.
2.
The Determination Lesson. The Steelers battled back from
a 7-5 start to the season. They almost didnt get into the
playoffs, then were seeded 6th (last). In order to get into the
Super Bowl, they won three straight playoff games on the road
against the top three teams in their division. This team was extremely
determined.
3.
The Gut Check Lesson. After a mediocre start, the Steelers
needed to win their last four games to make the playoffs. With
their backs up against the wall, Coach Cowher told his players
to look at themselves in the mirror, and ask themselves if theyre
doing everything they can for the team.
There
are other lessons, too. About working hard, and setting goals.
Focusing on the outcome. Visualizing the successful achievement
of goals. The Gut Check Lesson is the one that has really stuck
with me, and the one that I most wanted to share with you.
When
you look at yourself in the mirror, are you doing everything you
can to reach your goals? If the answer is yes, then congratulations.
Youre well on your way. But if theres more you could
be doing, then step it up a notch, beginning today.
The
Steelers didnt play their best game in the Super Bowl.
But they did play well enough to win. Make sure that youre
playing well enough to win
in life!

Quotes:
He
who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing
in life.
Muhammad Ali
Take
a chance! All life is a chance. The man who goes the furthest
is generally the one who is willing to do and dare.
Dale Carnegie
All
our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.
Walt Disney
Excellence
is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly
because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those
because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence,
then, is not an act, but a habit.
Aristotle

Self-Care:
Stress-Related
Headaches
If
stress is a reoccurring theme in your life, you most likely
encounter headachesor even migraines. If you experience
these throbbing, aching pains often, you should consult your
doctor right away. (And dont wait for your life to be
less stressful or theyll never go away!)There
are some activities and habits you can start doing today to
help stress-reduction and alleviate your headaches:
Maintain a healthy diet. The better you eat,
the better you will feel! Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, protein,
and whole grains. Avoid high-sugar and high-processed foods.
Drink up. Water that is! Drink at least
8 glasses of water a day to keep your body well-hydrated. Dehydration
is a major headache trigger.
Exercise. Regular exercise such as walking,
jogging, swimming, dancing, etc. will help relax your muscles
and relieve stress that builds up in your shoulders and neck.
Get adequate sleep. Find the right amount
of sleep that your body requires a night (most people need 7-9
hours) and keep a regular sleep schedule. Lack of sleep and irregular
sleeping patterns can cause headaches.
Relax! Find quiet hobbies or practice
meditation. This alone time is beneficial for a
peaceful mind. And when your mind is at peace, headaches are less
likely to occur.

Final
Thoughts: Winners
Winners
take chances.
Like everyone else, they fear failing, but they refuse to let
fear control them.
Winners don't give up.
When life gets rough, they hang in until the going gets better.
Winners are flexible.
They realize there is more than one way and are willing to try
others.
Winners know they are not perfect.
They respect their weaknesses while making the most of their
strengths.
Winners fall but they don't stay down.
They stubbornly refuse to let a fall keep them from climbing.
Winners don't blame fate for their failures, nor luck
for their successes.
Winners accept responsibility for their lives.
Winners are positive thinkers who see good in all things.
From the ordinary, they make the extraordinary.
Winners believe in the path they have chosen
even when it is hard,
even when others can't see where they are going.
Winners are patient.
They know a goal is only as worthy as the effort that is required
to achieve it.
Winners are people who believe in themselves.
They make this world a better place to be.
