By Stacey Mayo How many times have you thought about doing something but were so concerned that it might not go right, that you just didn't do it? The potential downside seemed too risky or scary. It was easier to play it safe. Needless to say, playing it safe will not bring us our dreams. There are always potential risks to trying something new as well as potential rewards. Are you willing to risk the possibility that it might not go right for the potential rewards to be gained? What fears come up when you think about taking a particular risk? Fear of looking foolish? Making a mistake? Losing money? Being wrong? And what if any of those things did happen? Would it be irreparable? Sometimes, our fear of failure or looking foolish is so strong, we think we will die. But we don't. And when we learn from our mistakes, we move one step closer to having what we want. It is also important to look at the potential rewards. What could happen if you take a risk and it works out? What do you really want and getting it means being a bit uncomfortable? A date with someone you admire? A new opportunity or career? More time to do the things you love to do? Would it be worth the risk if you could have what you really wanted? Here is a recent example from my life. For the past two years, we have sent out this newsletter and handled the administrative aspects of it ourselves. We have considered changing to an automated system but had concerns about some of the bugs seen in other systems -- the errors of which have caused them to lose many subscribers (or so it seemed). Those concerns had kept me from doing anything. Lately, the administrative work has felt overwhelming and I decided to find a system that we could feel good about. We found one we liked and from a financial viewpoint, it made sense to also use them to host my website as well. I also had concerns about this. What happens when a site is transferred.? Will it be down for a couple of days or weeks? What if it gets lost in cyberspace?. In my research, I found a company that had a good reputation. They spent lots of time upfront telling me how it works and I was re-assured - actually confident that I was making a good choice and all would go smoothly. But, alas, the worst thing I could imagine happened. My website got lost in cyberspace. I won't bore you with the details of how that happened. But we are all human and human error did occur. It took us 4 hours on the phone that Friday to find and reconstruct the most recent version of the website. By the end I was exhausted and upset that I had to spend my time in that way. But the hard part was over. By Monday, I got a call from someone who had seen my website and wanted to discuss coaching with me. Everything was working again. My worst fear had happened, Yet it only took 4 hours of my time to correct it. While I would rather that had not happened, in the bigger picture of things, it was only a blip on the screen of life. If that is the worst that could happen, I could handle it. What was the positive from this? We now have an automated newsletter system and administrative tasks should be cut by about 70%. This is the first one so we will see how it goes. I also got three months of webhosting for free. But the biggest thing I got was more courage in taking risks. The worst I imagined had happened and while I wouldn't wish that experience on anyone, I survived and came out stronger on the other end. What is a risk you have been reluctant to take? What is the worse that could happen? What are you afraid of, i.e., looking foolish? Making a mistake? Wasting money? Wasting time? Are the potential rewards worth it? This week be willing to take a risk. Let the winning be in taking the risk, regardless of the outcome. PAYING ATTENTION TO YOUR BODY by Deb Elkin
Many of you have heard the expression, "We are spiritual beings having a human experience." If this is, in fact true, what is this vessel that allows us spiritual beings to have this human experience? It is none other than our own very human body. Most of us tend to forget about or ignore our body. We certainly take it for granted. We forget how hard it works for us. We forget that without a healthy body, we would be hampered or restricted in how we can move and participate in the world. Why, one must wonder, would we forget about or ignore something that is so vital to our existence? The reasons are many and varied. We were never taught to value or pay attention to our body. We dont like our body. We are too busy paying attention to everything else that actively demands our attention, which our body may only occasionally do. Some highlights, to help us remember, and hopefully appreciate, all that our body does for us: Our legs and feet - They take us wherever we want to go. They help us participate in the world, be it getting us to our jobs, participating in sports, dancing, or driving a car. They help us run if we are in danger. They know how to put one foot in front of the other without us even thinking about it. What a gift! Imagine what it would be like if you had to think about how to make your feet walk every time you wanted to go someplace. Our arms and hands - They help us get things done in the world. They also allow us to reach out to others as well as to take them in. Because of our arms and hands, we can feed ourselves. We can wash our face and brush our teeth. We can pick up a crying child, swing a baseball bat, and give a loved one a hug. We can do our jobs at work. Imagine not having the ability to do these things! Our eyes allow us to read, see who is talking to us, take in beauty, cross streets safely and watch out for danger. Our nose allows us to smell flowers and freshly cut grass, bread baking in the oven, something burning on the stove. Our mouth allows us to enjoy and appreciate the food we put in it, kiss a childs boo boo and make it better, and feel the tenderness and sensuousness of a lovers kiss. Again, what would it be like to be in the world without any one of these? Think about what you would be missing! We need to recognize and appreciate our body for the precious commodity that it is. We need to pay attention to it so it doesnt wear out before its time. Its not meant to last forever - this is a human experience after all! Your body gifts you with its service. Gift it back by listening to it, appreciating all it does for you, and taking really good care of it. Give it good food and some form of regular exercise (as best you can - something is better than nothing), lots of water (bodies really like water!) and plenty of rest. Listen to it when it tells you it isnt feeling well or something is wrong. Be sure to nurture it. If you stand on your feet all day, massage them with lotion at night and say thank you to them for serving you so well. If you are on the computer all day, stand, stretch, shake and stretch your hands and arms several times throughout the day. Get a massage. Take a bubble bath. And consider taking one minute out of every day (thats not much!) to say thank you to your body for five things it did for you that day. It lets your body know you are not taking it for granted, and it helps you heighten your awareness and appreciation of all that your body does for you. ************************************************************* If something in this newsletter resonates with you and you would like support moving forward with it, Deb and Stacey are available for consultation.
