Is "Earning a Living" Stopping You?

Remember thinking you would really love to do that certain something you want to do and then all the reasons why you can't do it right now came rushing up to squash that dream and you thought, "I'll do it when I have more money" or "I'll do it when the kids graduate college" or "I'll do it when I retire". Sound familiar?

The truth is there is no perfect time to live out your wildest dreams. If you wait until everything lines up you may be waiting forever. It is when you actually commit to something, that things begin to line up.

Of course, most of us do have to "earn a living". But the good news is, you can make a living doing most anything. Really, you can. It won't necessarily happen overnight and you just may have to think outside the box.

I was at a party this weekend and met a woman. She and her husband own Open Mic Entertainment which is a professional management company that provides everything necessary for a bar or restaurant to host a successful music-based Open Mic Night. Her husband, David Craver is a musician. They saw a need for mid-life musicians who want to perform music but no longer desire to be in a band. Over time it has evolved into a full time business and now they are expanding into even more cities.

I love stories like this! Who would have thought you could make an entire business ouf of open mic night? This idea took some out-of-the-box thinking. How can you think outside the box about your dream?

If Ray could achieve his dreams in the dark, why do so many people have a hard time in the light?

Bouncing Back from Setbacks Key to Success

Dealing with adversity is not uncommon when it comes to achieving one’s goals and dreams. With the recent death of Christopher Reeve and the premiere of Ray, we have great examples of people who have overcome great physical challenges in order to succeed in their life passions.

Adversity often paralyzes people when it comes to realizing their dreams. Therefore, even though some people might have an able-body to carry out goals, their negative thinking patterns can prevent them from doing just that.

Learning to focus on what you want, rather than what you don't want is key. Pay attention to the prize rather than the fact what you want isn't here yet. When you do the latter you are focusing on what you don't want.

There will be obstacles in the road and you will make a mistake from time to time. The key is to learn what you need to learn and keep going for the dream. Everyone who I interviewed for "I Can't Believe I Get Paid To Do This!" had obstacles to deal with along the way. None of them let it stop them.

If you saw the movie, "Ray", you know that Ray Charles had emotional as well as physical obstacles to overcome along the way. It was not an easy journey but he overcame his gremlins and he got help to do it. If he could overcome his big challenges, you can overcome yours.

(If you have not seen this movie, I highly recommend it.)

Book Review by Terry Lonier, WOKINGSOLO.COM

"I Can't Believe I Get P-A-I-D to Do This!" On our best days,
soloists repeat this mantra to ourselves, marveling at the fact that we actually get paid to do the work we love. Author Stacey Mayo has
used a similar phrase as the title of her new book that features a
collection of contemporary entrepreneurs and the 26 strategies their
work and lives can teach us.

From maxims such as, "Choose the path of greatest ease" to tips on
how to shorten your learning curve, this book is a delightful mix of
the practical and the inspiring. The profiles range from the first
American woman to successfully climb Mount Everest to an Internet
entrepreneur who went bankrupt then went on to earn his first
million. I think the part I enjoyed most was the principle, "Be
Like Gumby: Stretch Beyond Your Comfort Zone."

Whether you're on your own, or know someone who's ready to make the
entrepreneurial leap, this book is worthwhile. "
