Dreams in the Making:
Every Day People Taking Steps to Make Their Dreams a Reality

I am excited to introduce this new column because I believe it will support you even further in living out your dreams. In "I Can't Believe I Get Paid To Do This!", I profile highly successful people who have made their dreams come true in a big way. There is so much you can learn from them and of course, I highly recommend it. (grin)

But this column is different. This column is about everyday people who are taking steps (some small and some large) toward making their big dream happen. The reason I believe this is so important is because it is the small steps that make the big dream a reality. And too often, we discount these 'lesser' accomplishments because we are waiting for the big dream. We think when the big dream happens, then we will have arrived. The truth is we never arrive. There is always more. That's what keeps life exciting. So enjoy, celebrate and learn as you move forward on your path. As you read about the journey of these people, hopefully you will relate to some aspect of their story and feel inspired to keep taking steps to make your big dream come true. (And then the next dream and the next dream ...)

After each interview, I list some of the key challenges faced and suggest turnaround strategies you can apply to your own goals and dreams.

This month's Dream in the Making is:

Rajah Maples Wallace: A Talk Show Host in the Making

Rajah has a big dream of having her own TV or radio talk show and wants to teach and conduct research at the university level.

As a step towards that dream, she landed a wonderful job as an evening anchor at a CBS affiliate. She is also working part-time on her doctorate in Journalism and Psychology.

Read the interview below to learn what it took to accomplish this.

What challenges did you have to overcome to accomplish these steps?

Relocating, working full-time and going to school, and many more.

Pick one challenge and tell us how you overcome it.

MOVING! I LOVED the community I lived in and really had a hard time moving and leaving my house and friends. I LOVE my comfort zone...maybe even more than the next person. I'm scared of feeling uneasy, and being in a new place, in a new workplace, in a new everything gave me a VERY uneasy feeling. I talked to my coach about it A LOT. She helped me see the big picture. She also told me that my friends there can still be my friends, and that I could find new friends, a new singing group, a new everything in my new location including a better house. So I learned to look at the move in a positive light which helped me a bunch as I was looking at it in a negative/painful light. I just kept telling myself that great things are ahead...great things are ahead.

It seems like another obstacle that you overcame was even applying for the job and believing that you could get hired as an anchor. Isn't that true?

You are absolutely right. I never DREAMED that I would land the job that I did for a number of reasons (and almost didn't even apply for it). I kept thinking that since the field is so competitive, I thought "other people" out there would be more qualified or better and would thus, land the job. I hadn't worked in television full-time for some time, so I thought that would be a strike against me. I thought they wouldn't like my voice. I just thought they'd pick someone else. I guess you can associate it with auditions for the lead part in a play or movie. Dozens of people audition for the lead role, but the director can only pick one. And the director says afterwards, "she had everything we were looking for." That's the analogy that kept running through my head during the interview process. But as it turns out, I was the person they were looking for! :)

On top of that, as it turns out, TWO stations in my market wanted me. I couldn't believe that two competitive stations wanted me! They had more confidence in me than I had in myself, which was a sad thing, but true.

What support did you have?

My coach wrote me an e-mail that I have kept, as I didn't want to delete it. It read, "Can you get that they both want you?" The answer was no. I didn't "get" that for a while. Eventually when I finally "got it," my coach helped me ask the station for what I wanted rather than responding by what I thought they wanted to hear. I always thought, "I'm just lucky to have a job, so don't make them mad...and respond to their needs". She helped me to start realizing, "I'm valuable" and to think about what I want and to ask for it. That was a big step for me.

Once you accomplished this, describe how it felt, what is was like to have made this step forward.

I felt as though I had won the lottery, and I couldn't believe it. I CONTINUOUSLY said prayers thanking God for this WONDERFUL dream come true. It was like an outside force had a hand in this, as I totally didn't believe in myself or never dreamed that I could come as far as I did. It was a Thanksgiving moment, and it wasn't even November. My heart and mind leapt for joy.

--------------------------------------------

Let's look at a couple of things we can learn from Rajah's story.

Challenge #1: Playing Small

Rajah, like so many of us, had big dreams but was playing small. She didn't believe she could land an anchor job and had nearly ruled out the possibility of ever getting one and even justified the reasons why she didn't want it.

Bottom line is she didn't value her own abilities. A part of her knew she was talented and good at this, another part (the gremlin) questioned it. Her gremlin looked for all the reasons why it wouldn't happen, like "having not worked in television full-time for a while".

Do you tend to doubt your own abilities -- do you focus on the mistakes, rejections or negative comments or the reasons why not rather than the successes, acceptances and positive comments?

Turnaround Strategy

To play big you need to believe in yourself. Start by making a list of all of your successes so far. Write down even the smallest ones. They count. Remember it is the small steps that lead to the realization of big dreams. Acknowledge yourself for what you have already done.

Tell yourself, "If I can do these things, I can do anything."

Take another step toward your dream, make it a bit bigger than the last one. Step out of your comfort zone. It is worth it.

Challenge #2: Settling

Rajah was originally willing to settle for whatever someone would give her. Settling is the thing that I see people do all the time. It is one of the biggest blocks to success.

How often do you actually ask for what you want? If you find yourself just taking what you think you can get or what someone else gives you, you are selling yourself short.

Turnaround Strategy

People settle for less than what they want all the time without even realizing they are doing it. This week, start noticing where you are getting less than what you really want. Then ask yourself, what do I want instead? Have I let anyone know what I really want? If not, ask for what you want.

If you have asked and been turned down, ask again. Ask what you need to do differently or need to learn to have what you truly desire.

Be careful not to get attached to getting what you desire from any one source. If one employer or person turns you down, ask others. Keep asking, growing and learning until you get what you desire or something even better.
