Stress and the Law of Attraction
by Stacey Mayo, MCC
We all have a certain amount of stress in our lives. It's part of the human condition. Different things cause stress for different people. And while Living Out Your Dreams is about having more fulfillment in your life, pursuing those dreams can also be stressful. Stepping outside your comfort zone, noticing inner conflicts, facing fears, asking for what you want and taking risks are all generally part of the process. And indeed those things can induce stress in most of us. And when we are stressed, we are tight and when we are tight, we are repelling that which we desire rather than attracting it.
So let's talk about how to deal with that stress. We can deal with stress on all different plains (mental, emotional, physical, behavioral and spiritual) and in fact, I think we need to. Today we are going to look at both the mental and spiritual levels.
First, notice what the stressor is (the thing which most recently caused you stress). Ask yourself, "Is there a pattern here?" Most of us will find that similar circumstances induce stress for us over and over again. If there is a pattern, are you ready to break it? If so, take the time to make that commitment now.
Think about the model you saw for dealing with stress from your family. Many of us learned non-productive/destructive methods for dealing with stress. Notice how many of these non-productive methods you use as well. For example I learned to worry excessively from my father. Worrying adds to the stressful feeling rather than alleviating it. You may have learned to throw a tantrum or to withdraw or to blame others for your problems. Notice what you do in stressful situations that isn't really working for you. With what can you replace it? Let's look at some of the different possibilities.
When we are stressed, we tend to dwell on the negative aspects of a situation. i.e., Why it is taking so long? What if I look foolish or make a mistake or forget what I wanted to say, etc.?
Turn it around by asking yourself positively worded questions...
Examples include:
- What can I learn from this situation?
- How can I make the rest of my day great?
- I wonder what great opportunities will show up today?
- How can I have fun with this?
- I wonder how I can create this to be positive for me?
Notice where your mind goes when you ask these questions.
Oprah talked about The Secret on her show recently. During that show, she mentioned that when she is in the middle of something that isn't going well or causes stress, she asks herself, "what is there for me to learn from this?" She wants to learn what she needs to know so she can move forward.
It is easy to get mad and blame others when a situation is not going well. But blame is actually a form of resistance that keeps us from attracting what we desire.
The place to look is within you. We are the co-creators of our world and everything in it. Now, this is not about blaming yourself or beating yourself up. That not only feels bad, it contracts you and lowers your energy.
Rather it is about looking inward from a place of curiosity:
- I wonder what there is for me to learn from this?
- I wonder if there is some pattern here?
- I wonder how I can shift this?
- I wonder how this could be much easier than it has been?
Those questions are gentler and the answers will start to move you and your energy in the right direction.
If you learned to worry like I did, get that worrying is just a negative projection of the future. Start visualizing what you want to happen rather than focusing on what you don't.
These things sound simple and you may have heard them before, but the truth is it takes practice and support to keep shifting our thoughts and to learn what we need to do differently sooner rather than dwelling on it for months or years.
Living out your dreams is part of the adventure we call life. Effectively shifting the stress that comes with it will make it more fun.
If you are ready to put the Law of Attraction into work in your life and get some support in shifting out of those stressful situations sooner rather than later, consider joining in on the new Living Your Dreams in The Flow Coaching Group, which starts in just a few weeks.
There are just a few spaces left. Will one of them be yours?
