1. Dear KristinCoach
=================
Dear KristinCoach,
I am totally overwhelmed. I barely have the time to write you this note but I am desperate to figure out why I am so stressed out and overloaded all of the time. What is the deal? More importantly, what is the solution. I feel like I have way too much on my plate all of the time. NO matter how hard I try, the load never gets lighter.
Signed,
Bitten Off More Than I Can Chew.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Chewy, (thought you'd enjoy the simplified name : )
OK, so I am wondering here.. Do you really WANT to lighten your load? Or, do you THRIVE on the excitement of having loads of stuff to do each day? You may actually NEED a busy life since adrenaline is your primary source of energy. Let me shine a light at the end of this dark tunnel, though..
Here is the deal.
People do what WORKS for them.. Plain and simple. It works for you to be busy. So, you are. What do you get from this type of lifestyle? Adrenaline? The excitement of trying to do it all? The thrill of being SuperWoman? A great reason to ignore other areas of your life since you are so jam packed? What is it?
Let me suggest this..
It really is not working for you to be SO busy. You are suffering. I can see it. Otherwise, you wouldn't have bothered to take the time to write. I am glad you did. In my experience people tend to overload themselves for several reasons:
1. They have tons of stuff to do.
OK, for a short, project-type, period of time, this is OK. Sometimes you need to take on a ton of work to get something done. But, sometimes you need to chill out and balance out, too.
2. They are the absolute worst boundary setters.
Have you tried to say "NO" to some of your obligations? DO you have to accept every single offer or project that comes your way? What could you get off your plate now? I urge you to get rid of ANY activity or project that you are doing out of "should" mode. Only do what you want to do.. You "should" have lunch with your friend, but do you want to? If not, say "NO". This will help you regain balance.
3. They are avoiding something.
Is this you? Maintaining a busy life is the best way to avoid changing it. Is this your plan? How could you dramatically simplify this week? Go for it. What are you IGNORING about your life that really needs attention now?
4. They are lying about something.
YIKES! Could this be true? The idea here is to simply tell the TRUTH to yourself. For example, if you've taken on tons of projects at work that make you wonder if you will ever see the light of day and have you hyperventilating into a paperbag in the bathroom stall at lunchtime, I wonder if you'd lied to yourself a tad? What is the TRUTH here?
Well, in this case, the TRUTH is that you cannot do it all. You've taken on too much. The truth is you need to tell your boss you cannot handle all of the work. So, give up the paper bag and go tell the truth. You will feel much better when you do.
5. They THRIVE on the energy of being busy.
People NEED energy. We all do. Ever thought about where you get yours? BUSY people tend to get energy from adrenaline, deadlines, challenges, etc. If you do not WANT this to be your source of energy, how about unhooking yourself from it? In other words, INCREASE your energy in other areas so you no longer need the energy the busy lifestyle gives you. Sounds kooky, but it works. So, how about increasing your water intake, exercising more, etc.. Do what you need to in this area and notice your NEED to be busy will rapidly decline. (See FEATURE article this week for ENERGY ideas)
OK, so if you actually took the time to READ all of this, I hope you soaked in some pointers. If you were TOO overloaded to read this, well then, I want you to know how much being OVERLOADED is costing you.. When you are overloaded, you oftentimes miss GREAT messages, opportunities, relationships. etc..
Also, it is totally possible to be busy without feeling overwhelmed. Go for the perfect balance for you. Ask yourself if you FEEL overloaded. If you do, do something about it. Sometimes, all it takes is a minor adjustment or two. Start out by telling yourself the TRUTH about your overwhelm.. What is the TRUTH? Why do you overload yourself?
Hope this helps!
3. Quote of the Week.
================
"Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could; some blunders and absurdities have crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; you shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense." -Ralph Waldo Emerson
4. Feature Article - Where Do You Get Your Energy?
==================
Ever thought about it? Where DO you get your energy? Where does it come from? People comment a lot about my high energy. I think it is one of my strengths. I am immensely grateful for it, too. Very much so.
Energy is so important. Without energy, it is tough to get anything done. Without energy, it is tough the be your ideal/highest self. It takes ENERGY to do just about anything. Do you agree?
One of the best ways to SABOTAGE yourself is to compromise your energy. I used to do this all of the time. For example, in the past, I would use SUGAR to affect my energy. If I felt run-down, I'd grab a brownie and use the sugar rush to get a bunch of work done. But, without fail, I would crash 30 minutes later. I was down for the count for the rest of the day. Kind of like a drug addict, but with sugar. For the last couple of years, I have learned to manage this much better by cutting out sugar altogether. I realized how precious my ENERGY was and how much the energy surge/crash costed me. It was not worth it.
Many people get energy from food. Sugar, Caffeine, etc. We need energy from our food. The question is this, though.. Is your food feeding you HEALTHY energy? Is your food a SPRINT or a MARATHON? Look for foods that help sustain you throughout the day on an even keel.
We get energy from PEOPLE, too. Ever thought of that? All relationships are energy exchanges. All of them. You give to me. I give to you, etc. Do the people in your life add or subtract your energy? Do they FUEL you or BURN you? How do you FEEL after being with someone? Ask yourself.
I took this thought very seriously in years past. I still do. Awhile back, I decided to only have people in my life who gave me energy or the very least did not suck up my energy. I call those people energy vampires. So, I redesigned some friendships and made some big changes by cutting some people out of my life altogether. Now, when a new person enters my life, I ask myself if they give or take my energy. If they add to my energy, they are invited into my world. If they take my energy and leave me feeling tired and spent, I limit my interaction with them or simply do not invite them into my world at all. Depends on the circumstance.
Another great area to think about is ENVIRONMENT. This is a HUGE source of energy for people. Does your environment/home/office/car etc. FUEL you? Do you feel energized or drained by your space? One of the easiest things you can do is to remove any energy drains from your space. Or, add a few items that give you a charge.
For example, one of my favorite clients just hung two paintings in her home. She said she loves looking at the artwork since it gives her a charge. Before, she used to get drained by looking at the clutter in her home. But, now that she is more organized and clutter free, she allows her space to FUEL her by adding small touches such as the paintings. What if you did that in your home?
Think about energy this week.. And, try the coaching questions below to get more clarity on this topic.
Hopefully, this ARTICLE gave you some energy. That was my intention : ) Let me know if it worked.
5. Try This! Lifework
=================
This week, drink at least 8 glasses of water each day. Sounds simple? Well, dehydration is a major source of energy lows.. If you need an energy boost, try some water. A FUN way to do this is to take a pitcher of water with a slice of lemon and put it near your desk at work each day. Make sure you have an inspiring glass or goblet (my favorite), too. The yucky, old stained coffee mugs at work don't really inspire you to drink up, do they? Be DECADENT and bring in (or buy) a beautiful pitcher and glass to work this week. Fill it up and drink up. Water is a wonderful source of healthy energy. Chances are, you are dehydrated RIGHT NOW.
