Building a Great Life.....
Last time, we talked about the concept of building a great life just as you would build a sturdy house. You'll need a foundation/floors, walls and a roof.
Let's talk about the walls.
The walls of your life are your NEEDS. Think about what you NEED in your life in order to feel secure and happy. What do you need to surround yourself with in order to build a sturdy house strong enough to hold a roof (your ultimate dream..ultimate job, etc)?
SO, what are NEEDS? We all need certain things.. Food, shelter, etc.. But, many of us need much more such as appreciation, respect, connection etc.
And, we all go to great lengths to get our needs met, no matter what it takes.
For example, someone needing "to be respected" may stay in a job they do not like simply because they feel respected at work and nowhere else.. Or, someone needing "security" may stay in a job they do not like since it provides them with financial security...no matter how loathsome the work may be...
We'll do ANYTHING to get a need met.. So, what do you do if you do not want to be driven by your needs? You either get them met elsewhere, or you erase them somehow..
For example, if you have a need "to be respected," you may want to look for this respect outside of work. Try coaching a little league team and earn the respect of the kids and parents.. Or, to cover the "security" need, you may want to agressively save your money and build up a great financial reserve, until you feel safe.
Once you get your needs met in other ways, you'll find it much easier to break free from the yucky job or bad situation. Make sense?
Now, let's try to figure out what YOUR needs are? We all have them. Once you uncover your basic needs, the next step is to make sure each one has an outlet or is met in some way.. Once you do this, you will feel very solid as a person...and ready to support your big dream (the roof).
To figure out what YOUR needs are, peruse the list below. Try to pick out the top 5-10 things you know you MUST have in order to feel good. Which needs do you know you must fill in some way? Next, make sure you have OUTLETS for each of these needs. How could you get each need met? CREATE ways to get each need met. Once you figure this out, you will be able to build the sturdy walls to support your great life.
You will find this exercise in the TRY THIS/Lifework section below.
Happy week!
