1. Welcome
* * * * * * * * *

Welcome back! It's been awhile since my last edition of this newsletter. Many wonderful things have happened lately, most memorably the 2nd row seat I had for the Elton John/Billy Joel concert last weekend. How INCREDIBLE!! My life is very good and I hope yours is blessed as well. However, 3 people I knew passed away recently. It makes you think about life and death a bit. So, the feature article in this newsletter was inspired by one of the 3 people we ALL knew...Mr. Rogers! Yes, he passed away. Please take a look at some of his lessons in this edition's feature. I think you'll like it.

Also, my e-courses are going strong. If you'd like to sign up, please go to http://www.kristincoach.com/ecourses.html
There is still room in the group that started this week.

One on one coaching is an option, too. Let me know what you'd like to see happen in your life this year and let's get started.

Read on and enjoy!

Kristin

2. Quotes of the Week.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

"As human beings, our job in life is to help people realize how rare and valuable each one of us really is, that each of us has something that no one else has -- or ever will have -- something inside that is unique to all time. It's our job to encourage each other to discover that uniqueness and to provide ways of developing its expression."
~Fred Rogers.

"Whenever there is a human being, there is a chance for kindness."
~Seneca

"The strongest oak tree of the forest is not the one that is protected from the storm and hidden from the sun. It's the one that stands in the open where it is compelled to struggle for its existence against the winds and rains and scorching sun."
~Napoleon Hill

3. Feature Article: Ten Lessons We Learned From Mr. Rogers

Ten Lessons We Learned From Mr. Rogers.

1. Be kind to one another.

Mr. Rogers was the epitome of "kindness." He treated everyone with respect and understanding no matter what they did for a living, how they looked, or if they were a stranger. Everyone crossing his path was treated with kindness. What if you decided to be kind 99% of the time or even for one solid day? Use our beloved Mr. Rogers as your mentor and see what happens in you life with the power of kindness.

2. There is only one YOU and you are special.

Ahhhh, the ever-constant message of Mr. Rogers. How many times did he look at the camera to assure YOU, the viewer, you were special? Wasn't that nice to hear? OK, admit it...it was, right? I think we all need to realize this a bit more, actually. Take a Rogers moment now and think about how special and unique you truly are.

3. Create Rituals. They make you feel safe and secure in a sometimes crazy world.

I must admit, I loved seeing that cardigan and shoe routine. It was comforting. Mr. Rogers had his little rituals he did for decades on that show. Do you have a few rituals that nurture you? If not, create a few. They're nice to have, really.

4. Take time everyday to be creative and play.

Every single show, that man had some sort of creative project brewing! His imagination was endless. Half the fun was just watching to see what was next. Being creative and playful is not just for kids; it's for YOU too. Make time everyday to do SOMETHING fun and creative if you want to regain your childhood sense of wonder and playfulness. Life is much more relaxing and enjoyable when you play.

5. We are all part of one big neighborhood...connected.

I think I may be guilty of dissing Mr. Rogers's "welcome neighbor" greeting. We've all done it; even Saturday Night Live poked fun at him. But, when I think about it now, it's such a nice spirit to have about the world. EVERYONE is your nice, caring neighbor. If you approach life this way, you will see many opportunities throughout the day to connect and learn from people, just as Mr. Rogers did on his show.

6. Use your imagination.

Remember the world of make-believe Mr. Rogers had? There were puppets and a trolley and that whole scene, if you recall. No, it's not silly to dream or create a world in your mind. Actually, most dreams BEGIN with a creation in your mind. So IMAGINE how you want your life to be and visit that place in your mind, often. In time, you'll be there in your real life. You see, if you create a compelling vision of how you want your life to be, you'll be pulled forward by it and motivated to make it a reality. (Ok, not that Mr. Rogers' make believe world was reality - I just think it was good training for using your imagination more.)

7. Talk about your feelings, it helps. "Whatever is mentionable can be more manageable," according to Mr. Rogers.

This was one of his favorite thoughts. Now that I look back, I do remember his way of encouraging conversations about feelings. Feelings were important to him. We don't discuss them enough, I think. It's true, though, as I've learned in coaching. When you discuss how you feel about your job, debt, or whatever irks you, it does make life a lot easier and the problem non-threatening and easily solved.

8. Goodness is attractive. People loved Mr. Rogers and kids were stuck to the TV when he was on.

The man was on TV for over 30 years! WOW. How major is that? I remember one of my clients said she just wanted to "be a force of good in the world." That was her whole goal. She had no idea what that meant specifically, but she knew she wanted to do good things for the world. I think we ALL do. This is the one consistent message I hear from clients, albeit in different words, it's all the same. GOODNESS is alluring for a reason. Mr. Rogers was all about goodness. I'm not talking "goody-goody" goodness either. I think it's just a good idea to think about how YOU could be more of a force of good in the world. GOODNESS could be your guiding light. Follow it, as Mr. Rogers did on his show.

9. It's a wonderful day, every day. Choose to begin each day with a smile.

I remember bobbing my head from left to right singing that song alongside Mr. Rogers as I sat watching him on the TV. What a happy song! What a great attitude! Begin each day with a song in your heart and a smile! It will shape your experiences for your whole life.

10. Design your life around your passion or the world may miss out on your gift.

This, perhaps, was his most important lesson. I read a bit about Fred Rogers to prepare for this article and I learned he started this show since he loved kids and felt very passionate about helping them. He created the show and the concept. No one knocked on his door initially. Mr. Rogers had a vision and he pursued it. What if he decided he was too scared to take the chance? What if he worried about being made fun of for being so sugary sweet or treating kids the way he did? What if he decided to take a safe corporate job instead of following his passion? The world's children would've missed out. I would've missed out. I am glad I did not.

Is this world missing out on your gifts? Use Mr. Rogers as your guiding light for goodness. Learn from his lessons. Be kind, creative, and consistent, and always follow your dreams...

In the immortal words or Mr. Rogers...

"You are special!

There is no one like you."

* * * * * * * * * * *

What are the 5-10 lessons you want your life to say about you? When you are gone, what would you like people to say they learned from YOU (for example, by direct teaching, or whatever means you have to teach!)?

I know this exercise can be tough since it forces you to look at your own mortality, but do it anyway!
