One of my brand new clients (enrolled in an ecourse) contacted me the
other day with a quick question. She wanted to know how to think
positively when everything in her world seemed to be spiraling out of
control. While her intention for 2008 was to turn things around, thus enrolling in a coaching program (smart move), she was still fearful life was dishing out lemons to her.

"Today, I found out the contractor our homeowner's association hired
to rebuild our home (that burned to the ground in 2007) went out of
business. So, I'm still in limbo with housing and tired of being
without my home and things." This was her main beef with the current
state of affairs.

So, in my coach-way, I asked her to see if she could find the GIFT in
all of this. In other words, stop thinking of her situation as "bad"
and start looking at it as an incredible gift...something to feel
grateful for....filled with opportunities.

She thought about it and quickly emailed me back and said (I'll
paraphrase from memory) "I suppose this gives me a chance to change
all of the things I didn't like about my condo and life. And, the
good news about the contractor is that I am being spared more delays.
The Universe is taking care of me and making room for a better
contractor."

In other words, her string of bad luck was changing.

Now, it's too soon to know whether or not the new contractor is truly
a blessing, but I've coached enough people over the years to have a
pretty good idea. I'm sure her luck is changing.

However, the main change my new client made this week was MENTAL. I
asked her to start looking at EVERYTHING as a gift and stop labeling
things as "bad." Instead, things just ARE. Or, in my book,
everything that happens to you is good news...even if it doesn't
appear that way at first. It's fun to look at life that way. Give it a try.

"WOW, my entire body felt calm when I started looking for the gift,"
she said.

And this, my friends, is what we call a SHIFT in coaching lingo.
Others may call it a breakthrough, an "aha" moment or a new way of
thinking.

Soon, my new client will also see how living without her belongings
(if you recall, her home burned down)is ALSO a gift. Not having a lot of stuff to deal with makes life so much simpler and easier! I mean really, how many of you secretly wish someone could come over and remove all of the clutter and extra stuff that bogs you down at home? Many of us want that because we yearn for an easier, simpler life. When we have less stuff to manage, we have more time to do what really matters most.

Do you want to know what really powerful coaching is truly about?
It's about SHIFTS. It's learning to look at your life in a more
enlightened way which in turn will reduce stress, increase results and make you feel more connected and balanced.

Now, I know many of you are still thinking about the goals you may
want to achieve in 2008. Some of you have long lists and others have
swirling thoughts in your mind ranging from "losing weight" to "making more money."

But, do you ever think about how YOU will need to change in order to
pull off your goals? What needs to happen with YOU to make "losing
weight" an easier task this year?

The answer? In most cases, it takes a SHIFT. So, what's the most
important shift YOU need to make this year?

Let's go back to the housing-challlenged client mentioned above. By
shifting from reacting to "problems" in a fearful way to regarding all problems as GIFTS, she instantly felt calmer and more peaceful. So, if finding more peace is on your goal list this year, consider
adopting the shift of seeing all things as a gift. Practice making
that shift ALL year and let's see what happens. Better yet, remind
yourself by putting up a big sign that says "Everything is a gift" and looking at it each day.

When you stop struggling and wondering why "bad" things are happening in your life and accept that NOTHING is bad (and in fact, is a gift), it frees you up so actually take advantage of the situation. To get into the pocket of the problem, so to speak. And, to learn the lessons you were meant to learn. This is how we all grow.

To help you choose a possible SHIFT for 2008, I'd like to share some
comments from my Goals Program (another ecourse). The objective of
that program is to choose 100 goals in 8 areas of life and then focus
on a couple each week. It's a year of consistent, never-ending goal
achievement. Fun stuff. Of course, along the way, many shifts were
made.

Here are some of the shifts the participants from last year's program
recently shared with me:

--> I am finally working smarter, not harder.

--> I am more confident and not doubting my choices any more.

--> I am more loving and accepting of myself instead of beating
myself up for what wasn't accomplished.

--> I am less "safe" and more of a risk taker!

--> I am less fearful and EXPECT good things to happen.

--> I ask for what I need instead of assuming people will know.

--> I decided I deserve to have what I want and be first on my list,
instead of last.

--> I approach life from a spirit of faith and not fear.

Do you know what these people actually ACCOMPLISHED as a result of
their shifts? One left a crummy job and started her own business.
Another swung from a trapeze and learned the art of letting go
literally and figuratively. Another brave client went from being on
the brink of divorce to transforming her marriage. And, another dear
client nearly doubled her income. Let's not forget about the client
who finally learned to break down gargantuan goals into steps so
manageable she was able to take action each day without feeling
overwhelmed which eventually led to a NEW career, NEW home, TRIM body and NEW romantic interest.

What's interesting is that these clients didn't NAME the shift they
wanted to make 12 months ago. They simply listed important goals. But, after looking at what they accomplished, the shift became very easy to identify. It got me thinking...wouldn't it be fun to name the shift in advance and see what happens?

You see, ONE shift can change your whole life. What's the ONE big
shift you'd like to make in 2008? And, if and when you make the shift, what do you believe will change in your life?

Think about it this week and when you've identified the SHIFT you
want to make this year, write it down in big, bold letters. Frame it
and put it by your bathroom sink. Then, each day, while your brush
your pearly whites...you'll be reminded.

So, even if you don't have a list of goals this year, surely you can think about one important shift you'd like to make?! Go for it.

And, if you'd like to dazzle your friends twelve months from now at the annual holiday parties....consider getting crystal clear about ALL of the goals you're ready to accomplish this year in ALL areas of your life. A lot of the coaching I do with people is helping them identify and make the shifts necessary to get the results they want. Check out my Goals Program mentioned below.

Let me know your thoughts about your ONE shift for the year, too!
