Going Where: Start Living the Happy, Rewarding Life You Deserve ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If someone were to ask you what the worst decision of your life was, what would you say? Are you still beating yourself up for making that decision? Are you still experiencing the consequences of that poor choice? Are you still asking, "How could I have been so stupid?" When something goes wrong in our lives, we often lament, "Why is this happening to me? It's not fair!" Or we may direct our rage inward and condemn ourselves for the poor choices we have made. Our mirror shows us the pain, the suffering, and the sadness. We attend seminars, hire psychologists and coaches, and spend millions on self-help books, all in an effort to feel better about ourselves. But what if there was an easier way to avoid the pain of poor decisions? I began the journey of writing my new book, Going Where, Ancient Wisdom for People Today, over four years ago. Going Where is not only your guide to avoiding poor decisions; it provides a road map for creating a happier and more fulfilling life. The deeply touching true stories in Going Where illustrate the power this simple approach has to make profound changes in your life. The stories will make your heart ache; they will also provide you with hope, even in the darkest hours when you must face illness and death. The approach in Going Where is simple. It begins with your season of birth and uses a holistic approach to involve all parts of your body in your decision making process. What surprised me as I researched the book, were the hundreds of studies demonstrating that season in which you were born has a profound influence on your life. The research also demonstrates that using a balanced approach, one that integrates the mental, spiritual, emotional, and physical aspects of your being, taps into different modes of processing information. This holistic approach, rather than the traditional "think-do" pattern that we use for business, yields better decisions resulting in better outcomes. Below you'll find a brief synopsis of the science that actually supports the Native American wisdom that says the energy of your birth season is with you throughout your life. Thinkers or Mental (Key words: "I think") Winter (represented as the "North" direction on the Native American Medicine Wheel) is a time of planning, thinking, and consuming your harvest from the previous season. According to the research, those born in December, January, and February as a group have larger heads, will do better in school, and have better cognitive (thinking) skills than those born at other times of the year. They have higher amounts of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin in their cerebrospinal fluid. This makes this group less willing to take risks. They are also more like to suffer from brain tumors and epilepsy. When you think, you use the prefrontal lobes of your brain (the part of your brain directly above your eyebrows) and your brain generates tall, rapid waves called a beta waves. Believers or Spiritual (Key words: "I believe") Spring (East on the Wheel) is the time you plant. Planting a seed is an act of faith. Like those born in winter, those born in March, April, and May also do better in school than those born in summer or fall. They are also more likely to have physical problems including heart attack, schizophrenia, diabetes, and anorexia. Researchers site two primary reasons why this may occur. First, a mother who gives birth in the spring will have the second trimester of her pregnancy during the winter. This is the time that she is most likely to contract a viral infection such as influenza. Numerous studies demonstrate a link between the mother having influenza during her second trimester and her child's schizophrenia. Other physical disorders also appear to be linked to maternal illness during the second trimester of pregnancy as well. The second explanation is that conception for spring births takes place during the summer. Hot summer temperatures reduce sperm quality. These two factors appear to make those born in the spring more vulnerable to physical illness. In terms of brain activity, thinking and believing are quite different. The research shows that when we view religious symbols, meditate, or pray, the temporal lobes are active. (If you put a head band at ear level over the top of your head, it would be sitting on your temporal lobes. This part of the brain also regulates hearing.) While thinking generates beta waves, focusing on our beliefs, praying, or meditating produces short irregular waves called alpha waves. Feelers or Emotional (Key words: "I feel") Summer (South on the Wheel) is the time of year where you nourish or care for your crops. "Caring" is emotional. Research demonstrates that those born in June, July, and August are better adjusted emotionally as compared to those born during the other seasons. They also tend to be more extroverted and more thrill seeking. In contrast to those born in the winter, summer born individuals have less norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine in their cerebrospinal fluid. Lower levels of these three neurotransmitters result in "quieter" nervous systems that provide summer-borns with better emotional resilience. Simply put, it takes more stimulation to upset them. On the other hand, those born in the summer are more likely to experience learning disabilities and to do poorly in school. The limbic system secretes ACTH when we experience strong emotion. This results in the "fight or flight" response. The limbic system also controls our automatic (autonomic) responses including making our heart beat faster, our palms sweat, and releasing stored energy so we can run away or fight. Unlike thinking and believing, which tend to reside primarily in the cortex, emotional responses generally involve the entire body. Knowers/Doers or Physical (Key words: "I know") Fall (West) is the time of the year where you reap your harvest. In Native tradition, this is the physical part of the year. Research shows that those born in September, October, and November are actually stronger physically than those born at other times of the year. While they live longer, they also appear to be more sensitive to their physical environment when it comes to health issues. Specifically, they are more likely to suffer from allergies (physically triggered illnesses), bronchitis, and are also more likely to have problems with addictive behavior. Our memories or physical "knowing," reside in different areas of the brain. For example, we form memories in an area called the hippocampus. This process requires acetylcholine. When we lose our "knowing" from diseases such as Alzheimer's or senile dementia, the brain actually loses acetylcholine receptors. In fact, in severe cases, an Alzheimer's patient's brain may weigh 50 percent of what a normal brain would weigh. We also know that our reflex responses are also regulated by serotonin and acetylcholine. When you type, ski, or do any other physical activity, you are using muscle memory. The cerebellum and the brainstem (the reptilian brain) regulate these functions and include your entire muscular and skeletal system. Going Where shows you how to take this information and apply it to the decisions that you must make. It also illustrates how effective this approach is in terms of confronting life's most difficult challenges, including death and illness. If you are searching for a life filled with happiness and joy, Going Where is your guide to making the choices that support every aspect of your being, both today and tomorrow. This may be the most important book that you will ever read. Welcome Notes ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Welcome to our new subscribers this week. Each week RealClues provides you with great strategies to improve both your business and your life. If you find this issue of RealClues helpful, take a moment to hit the "forward" button and send it to another friend in the business. We had an amazing conference in Albuquerque. Look for highlights in next week's edition of RealClues. In coaching, we talk about the "feather, the bat, and then you go splat" model. What this refers to is the messages that we receive and that we often ignore. I was pushing myself too hard. I was lifting weights and kept getting pain in my left arm. Several weeks later, I fell and broke my left arm. I continued to push through with my hectic travel schedule, did the conference, and then in the three days after the conference ended, had a serious attack of vertigo, then threw out my back, and caught a cold. I've spent the last three days pretty much in bed. The point is that my body was telling me to slow down and I didn't listen. I hit the "splat" part of the model. It's clear to me that if I don't alter my behavior, the next round of consequences is going to be horrible. Are others telling you to slow down? Is your body "warning" you that you are pushing too hard? If so, please listen to the message and start taking time for you before an illness or accident makes you go splat! CoachingClues: Attraction in Action ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ According to the movie "The Secret," the principles of attraction have been around for over 1,000 years. When I first started speaking about attraction in 1997, most agents looked at me as if I had just landed from outer space. Today, attraction has gone main stream with well known talk hosts such as Oprah and Larry King featuring how these principles can change your life. While there are many different versions of this model, the following approach has proven to be very effective for our clients. Step 1: We attract who we are The people around us are a reflection of ourselves. This is another way of saying, "like attracts like." If your life is in chaos, you will attract people whose lives are in chaos. People are drawn to those who share similarities. A recent training illustrates this point. In the morning, we discussed the principles of attraction. Later in the day, we did a networking session to illustrate how to be more effective at building connection when you meet someone new. The instructions were to meet two new people in the room and to find out something unusual about each one. The one question that you couldn't ask was, "What's unusual about you?" What was fascinating about this exercise was that most people found that they were "unusual" in the same way. For example, one woman was from a very small town in the Midwest. One of the two people she spoke with had a son living in the same small town. Virtually everyone in the room reported that they had attracted someone with whom they shared a surprising number of idiosyncratic similarities. Step 2: Create Space Clean your closet, clean out your files, and stop spending time with people who drain you of your time and energy. An old Chinese proverb says, "You cannot fill a cup that is already full." Before something new and better can come into your life, you must first get rid of the old stuff that is blocking it. For example, there's no room for a shiny new car when there's an old, beat-up junker in the garage. Getting rid of the junker creates the space for your new car to appear. Step 3: Be clear about what you want to attract and how you would like it to appear Several weeks ago I was feeling overwhelmed with preparing to list our house, hosting our first conference, and beginning a five week consulting contract. My self talk was saying, "I don't want to deal with this move." "I wish this contract could start a week later so I would have another week to prepare." "I really could use some downtime for a break." I attracted exactly what I asked for: I fell down and got a break--a broken arm. I could do virtually nothing to help to prepare for our move and I had to delay the beginning of my consulting contract one week so the doctor could replace my splint with a cast. The old adage that says, "Be careful what you wish for," is a wise piece of advice. Make your wish and be sure to clarify how you want it to come to you. Visualize exactly what it is as well as the specific details of what the experience will be like. Step 4: Give back No matter how scarce things seem, each of us has things that we don't need or use. Whether it is old clothing, household items, etc. ask, "Is there someone who needs this more than I do?" If so, give it away. If you truly have nothing to give away, read to a sick child, give someone who cannot drive a ride, or visit a shut-in. In general, the old adage, "You get what you give" is true. What you give to others is almost always returned with interest. Step 5: Take time each day to be grateful for the abundance that already exists in your life. Even if you have an "abundance" of unpaid bills, remember your creditors had an abundance of faith you would pay them back. We often take our good health, homes, families, and much more for granted. Try keeping a gratitude journal where you acknowledge at least five things per day for which you are grateful. Step 6: Take a penny and clinch it tightly in your fist. Is there anyway for more money to come into your tightly fisted hand? In contrast, if your palm is open, there is plenty room for the penny plus a handful of $100 bills. Quite simply, making space, giving back, being grateful, and "opening your hand" are the keys to attracting the business and the personal life that you want. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 4.
