The One Critical Thing For Today and This Month

There are hundreds of things we could put our energy into on any given day - maybe thousands...but there is only ONE that counts. My belief is that people who get the best results are the best at identifying that one thing on an hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly basis.

Sounds simple and is...intellectually anyway. The challenge tends to come from our reluctance to acknowledge and focus on that one thing as it tends to be tough or uncomfortable at times - distractions seem soooo much easier.

With my coaching clients, we spend time in most meetings identifying what that next one thing is - that thing that will give them the best bang for their buck in terms of results, momentum, and confidence for the next, bigger step. The interesting (and often fun) part of the process is sorting through all of the distractions, new ideas, and non-critical activities that consume their minds.

Example:

One of my clients is preparing their business for sale next year and is aggressively moving to get it positioned to fetch top dollar.

In a meeting this week, they had a tremendous idea for an add on to the business that will add much to the future potential for the business and resale value. Great, but the one thing they are focusing on this quarter will add much more value to the business and is even better to focus on and deliver first. The new idea (possible distraction) is good, but following through on completing the current one thing is excellent.

The reason that many businesses don't hit their potential (or even close) is the fact they get easily distracted by new shiny things (new ideas and opportunities) that will pull them away from executing the current critical initiatives that will give them the biggest boost.

Half of my job is to help people clearly identify the one thing out of the hundreds and stay focused on it (either for a week or quarter) with persistence and sometimes accountability until it is delivered.

It is soooo easy for people to get pulled by the thousands of fires that seem to be pulling them off course - I see it as a test of wills in order to seperate those that are committed and serious from those that are not ready yet.

Coach Kevin's Challenge

What is your ONE critical thing to deliver:

  • This Quarter (end of December 2007)
  • In November
  • This Week
  • Today

This obviously gets results, but even better, sometimes the mind of the leader is freed up because this key project is now an asset instead of a liability. You see, when we know about this one thing and have not completed it yet, it constantly pops in our mind and makes us feel guilty and less than successful - like a black cloud over us...even if we are the only one that knows about it.

Yes, it is a great strategy for results, but even better for freeing us up mentally so we can better focus on more important and powerful things.
