What I Did on
My Summer Vacation

I know, I know. You haven’t seen this newsletter in quite awhile—April to be exact. And people have actually started to notice, sending me e-mails or meeting me face to face and asking when the next one will come out or telling me they miss hearing from me. I thank you for that!

So here it is, and here’s what I’ve been up to instead of writing this newsletter. About a year and a half ago, my husband, Steve, was diagnosed with diabetes. He’s young, healthy and active—not the typical person you think diabetes would strike. But genetics were not working in his favor.

He has managed his disease with a kind of determination and discipline that continues to inspire me. He checks his blood sugar level no less than six times a day, plus injects insulin before some meals and at bedtime. And he remains active, even though it means he has to be extra vigilant about low blood sugar events.

As we’ve learned more and more about the disease, we’ve found that most people with diabetes are not so diligent. They are confused by all of the intricacies of diabetes and largely ignore their doctor’s advice to eat better and become more active.

To fill this gap, Steve and I have been developing a business plan for a web-based company that will offer diabetics and their loved ones a place to go for support, education and encouragement. Our goal is to show this population (18 million and growing rapdily) that they can live a life with no limits. We all know how hard that can be—even if you’re not facing a lifelong disease that requires daily management.

I am so excited about the potential this new venture to touch people's lives in a positive way. While I will still be offering all of my writing, training and coaching services through Ovations, I will now focus my marketing efforts on the new business. In fact, this new venture will be a focus and passion until the day a cure for diabetes is found.

I will continue to issue this newsletter periodically to help inspire you through your own endeavors and to keep you posted on my progress. I know I’ve said it before, but I can’t say it enough: Thank you for all of your support of my work and continued enthusiasm for each new direction my ever-evolving business has taken. If I can help to support you through the next exciting phase of your life or business, you know where to find me!

And if you have any loved ones with diabetes, we would love to hear your (and their) thoughts on how our new business can serve them. In fact, we are starting an advance e-mail list for people who want to be alerted to the launch of the site (by the end of 2005). If you would like to be added to that list, please e-mail me.

Give with a Purpose

We’ve all been bombarded with news of the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, yet it’s still hard to comprehend the vast extent of the damage to people’s properties and lives. Everyone one of us who still has a place to call home, running water, and working electric and phone service owe it to our neighbors down south to contribute something to the relief effort. The money is pouring in now, but the needs will continue for many months to come. My gifts will go toward efforts to protect animals and return them to their owners, as well as organizations that deliver much-needed medications to people with diabetes. Please give now or later to an organization that has personal meaning for you.

First it is necessary to stand on your own two feet. But the minute a man finds himself in that position, the next thing he should do is reach out his arms.

When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, 'I used everything you gave me.'
