The Dark of the Year
As I am writing this the wind is howling around the corner of my little home with disturbing intensity, pushing on the glass of the windows, crashing against whatever will move under its power. We have just passed the shortest day of the year but the return of the light is not yet visible. It is said that a watchful eye can tell that the light is returning by Epiphany, but its not yet time. Each year we enact the Christian and Jewish holidays with lights, trees, candles, decorations, and with an abundance of gift giving. We light up the darkest days with our fellowship and our best wishes for peace on earth, goodwill and charity to those less fortunate. We are so busy filling the dark time of the year with our light that we can sometimes miss seeing the darkness for what it is. This dark time of the year can bring us back to essentials. As the garden plants lay down on the compost heap and return to the rich dark humous to give life back to the earth, so we can also pause from our busyness here in the dark, and make room for whatever new growth will come in its own time. We pause here in the dark of the year, letting our old lives go, making room for what is new and fresh and full of life. The dark invites us to a world of infinite potential, where offal can sprout orchids, and sorrow and joy grow from the same root. The dark of the year invites us to rest in this world for a moment or two, to rest our ideas about who we are and what we are doing, to open to this deep well of potential, and then to witness from there, what it is to light a candle, or to notice the miracle of the days once again leaning their balance towards the return of the light.

Meanwhile "Awake Publishing" has been born as the business that will make this book and future books available to the public. Watch the website over the next month for more information. The blog is up now but not yet active as I take time myself to pause in the dark of the year. Although there is a link on the "Life Beyond Belief" page if anyone wants to see it, it is not really available yet, as I find time to learn more about blogs and online community building.
